The European Chronicles 4.0. Timmelsjoch, Pitztal & Back to Italia

The European Chronicles - Chapter 4

Timmelsjoch, Pitztal & Back to Italia

Talk about a party at the top; Timmelsjoch has it permanently installed.

And the restaurant...

Fortunately, it has stopped raining when I say Ciao! to Krisanne's hotel, the Golden Rose; the staff literally came out and waived good bye!

Of course, a cappuccino stop on the way up Timmelsjoch

As you sip your perfectly crafted cup, you gaze at this...

The inside of the Gasthaus is pretty nice too

At the top

Mmmmmmmmmm...tasty!  Makes very nice, nasty sounds...

After you come thru the toll (from the right in the above shot) you cross from Italia into Austria.  Next stop, Pitztal, which is at the end of a very beautiful valley.

Tonight's hotel...very, very posh!

Great dinner, and a wonderful spa...should have stayed two days!

For the wine lovers out there (you know who you are!) an excellent wine list, prominently displayed! Plus, they greet you with a glass of Prosecco so, you know, my kinda place... 😁

They rolled out the red carpet for Mia, along with a luggage dolly..."you must park the motorrad in P2, it is closer to the zimmer."

Today's route:

Sadly, I only stayed one day.  But another spectacular potential hiking area for next year.  Just walk right out the door...

The next day would take me over Passo di Resia, also known as Reschen Pass, where an entire town was flooded to create a hydroelectric project.  This happened in 1950 (although the plans were drawn up before WW II) and the town's inhabitants were forcibly removed and required to settle elsewhere.  The Old Curon church tower is all that remains; a silent reminder jutting out from the still water.

I'd been here before; 2005 on my first Edelweiss tour:

But before Passo di Resia, leaving Pitztal was chilly, about 41 degrees F (that's 5 C), but it warmed up reasonably quickly, and the route west out of the valley was stunning.

To say there are a lot of bikes, of all types, dramatically understates it...random side of the road snap...

The hotel in Laives, just south of Bolzano, in the middle of apple orchards.  Best I've ever tasted, by a wide margin; the hotel has bowls of them set out everywhere.

The clouds were starting to build, but I got in some local exploration before a big boomer hit that night.  Riding around thru more orchards and vineyards, I came across this extraordinary bridge on some little goat path.

I'm pretty sure it's old...  😎

They have a local "spritz" here, something only available in this area.  Prosecco, of course, sparkling water, and some type of apple based liquor that's quite good.

And robotic entertainment silently keeping everything nicely trimmed.

Millenial Shot; yes, that's number two...

I'll be here for a couple of days doing loops (see all those other green squiggles?)...the route here:

Ciao!
