The European Chronicles 3.0 Wolfanpass, Fluelapass, Ofenpass and Stelvio

The European Chronicles - Chapter 3

Wolfanpass, Fluelapass, Ofenpass and a little nibble from Passo dello Stelvio

Own it, just own it.

It had been pouring for almost an entire day, but as I leave Chris and Doris, it is only cloudy (with a chance of meatballs 😂).  Heading to Italia, via Wolfganpass, Fluelapass, Ofenpass and Passo dello Stelvio, for a night at "Krisanne's hotel"; the Golden Rose in Schnals, Italy, a potential hiking location for next year.

The day before in Azmoos, yikes!

It started raining pretty hard up Wolfanpass heading into Davos, but dried out on the other side.

The passes were generally dry, but cold, as in high 30s, mid-40s cold.  Quite the change from the past few days, which were mostly 80s.

After Ofenpass, I debated whether to do Stelvio.  It seemed to be brightening and warming so...yes.  Cue the Jaws music.

Starting the climb

Into Italia!

Giant party at the top...and this is a Tuesday!

I gotta get outta this place...

Had a minor tip over on the way down; steep downhill 180 degree right, guy in a Jeep Grand Cherokee (can you believe it!) coming up cut to the inside instead of swinging out wide, and I had nowhere to go.  Would have needed a 10 meter long right leg to hold the bike up, I had to stop and the road just fell away to the inside.  Minor damage to the right pannier and fairing, all still ridable and I'll deal with it after I return the bike to Heidelberg.  I've got to own this though...what I should have done was stop much higher up in the downhill and not depend on someone else taking the correct line.  Bad decision; won't do that again...

Two other interesting things:  a guy immediately jumped out of his car to help me right Mia.  And after I rode to a safe pullout to check things over, a young couple pulled in and said, "We took a photo of his license plate.  He left you no room!"  Could not have been nicer.  Shit happens.

The day ends at Krisanne's hotel, the Golden Rose.  A simply beautiful, remote place.

Yes, it started raining again.

Spent the cocktail hour talking to Manfred, the proud owner of this R80/GS.  He's planning a trip to Tunisia to ride the road Rommel built.

The hotel had a "Dumpling Sampler" menu that night; 7 differently prepared dumplings, a traditional Tyrol dish, including a desert dumpling.  All were terrific.

Keeping watch over Mia

Tomorrow...Austria...
