The European Chronicles 2026.4 - La Thuile and Petites Routes

 La Thuile

First, let's get the pronunciation down:  it is "La Tweel," and rhymes with "wheel."  ðŸ˜Ž

A river runs through it, in case you didn't notice:  the Dora di Verney, which is fed by the Rutor Glacier.  There are, allegedly, spectacular waterfalls too, but they require a hike and the hiking portion of the European Chronicles team is sadly missing.  Internet shot to satisfy the curious:

I did, however, walk around the town.  ðŸ˜Ž

La Thuile sits at the eastern end of the Petit San Bernard Pass.

Ruining a perfectly good stained glass sculpture.

Moto-friendly, as is everywhere I've ever been in Europe.

Got it?  There's a quiz later.

Tourism in the winter centers around skiing; in the summer it is mountain bikes.

To give you an idea...these people are CRAZY!

The "exit."

I bet this even surpasses the Lindt store...closed until the 18th.

Some perspective...the local gas station, only regular and diesel.

At current exchange rates, for regular gas that's

My hotel, the Chalet Eden, a short walk along the river from the center of town.

The Small Roads

The Col de L'Iseran remains closed, so I'm going to explore some of the smaller roads in France.

For sale, right on the Petit San Bernard Pass.  Hmmm...

I'm heading to the Refuge Rosuel in the Parc National de la Vanoise.

The Refuge, of course...

Because, civilization.  ðŸ˜Ž

Relive 'France Petites Routes'

Some "route failure" on the way back, but easy to correct.  Lots of road construction in the "off season" that lead to unexpected closures in these ski areas.

Reward.  ðŸ˜Ž

The Col de L'Iseran is supposed to open tomorrow...whoo hoo!

Ciao!
