The Last Hur-Ride

Lockdown

It only took 1,200 confirmed cases of the virus for our esteemed governor to order "shelter in place," one of the last states to do so.  The order goes into effect 5 pm today, and lasts until 30 April, if not longer.  A non-stop Sonoita/Patagonia loop ride today is bittersweet.

The 3 Marlenas got some Sta-Bil in their gas when I got home, juuuuuuust in case this lasts longer than anyone anticipates.  Everybody gets tucked into their respective corners.

Snug, and a bit of a puzzle, but everything fits.  ðŸ˜Œ

You want to pay close attention to Nigel's right side... 😱

Time for some Moto Sonora "Victory or Death" in the hot tub.  Seems sadly fitting.

The lockdown order is very weak and, arguably, I could still ride to "pick up groceries."  In fact, the order states that "[n]o person shall be required to provide documentation or proof of their activities to justify their activities under this order."  So those that want to, that think this is all a "hoax," will do whatever they want, making the order virtually useless and really only a political stunt.  The order even considers golf courses to be "essential" businesses.

But my intent is to park the bikes.  To memorialize this moment in time, here's what the infection map looks like as I type this:

Arizona, right now, is better off than most, but we still have over 1.200 cases and climbing quickly, with 24 deaths.  I have a feeling that those numbers are going to look very low just a few weeks from now.

I was going to do some trips in April and May, but expect those will not happen.  Utah is planned for June, there's still some hope there, but we'll see.  And Europe is in the "who the hell knows" category right now.  But this is just whining; the worldwide impact of this virus is tragic, and doing everything we can to slow the spread must be top of list.

Be safe, be well and...

Update:  6 April

AZ is now over 2,400 cases

The US has passed the 10,000 dead mark.  Worldwide it looks like this:

This sums it up, sadly.  I am amazed, still, at how many people are not taking this seriously.  Idiotic.

And my new TJs shopping outfit:

Update:  16 April

Beer from Pueblo Vida, dinner from Diablo Burger, and a brand new mural.

Arizona now has 4000 cases and 140 deaths.

Worldwide, over 2 million cases, 140000 deaths.  The US, 640000 cases, 31000 deaths.

We've cancelled our 2020 Europe plans, and were able to postpone our Casa Olea reservation to 2021.  Essentially, we'll do in 2021 what we planned for 2020.  With the European countries starting to gradually open in May, if there is a resurgence, I expect that will happen July/Aug, and the Euro countries will react much quicker this time with quarantines, closures and restrictions.  Too many borders to cross, too many uncertainties.  Plus, if we did need healthcare, we'd be foreigners using a very stressed system.

And worth a read:  The Blue Groove.  Finally, finally, finally somebody says it.

Update:  2 May

Here we are, about a month later.   AZ now has 8400 cases and 350 deaths.

The state lockdown has been extended to 15 May.  Many states are starting to loosen restrictions, as are some European countries.  Worldwide looks like this:

There have been 66,000 deaths in the United States.  30 million are now unemployed.

Personally, we're both healthy and Krisanne is still working, although the Court is talking about pay cuts and furlough days, which are certainly better alternatives to lay offs.  Been riding Ralph around quite a bit and found this neat tracking program I can't wait to try on the motorcycle.   Would have been awesome thru Europe... 😰

And to get a bit more serious about the bicycling, did a bunch of research then placed an order for an All City Space Horse...gotta love the name!  We're one mile from an entrance to The Loop, a 100 mile bike path circumnavigating Tucson.  With Moto travel curtailed, I need another 2-wheeled hobby:

Should be in mid to end of May.  Ordered thru Transit Cycles, a great little bike shop in the Mercado District that caters to "practical" riding.  Good folks, and I'm looking forward to getting more exercise.  As the saying goes:  Steel is Real. 😎

Of course, the farkling must commence:  a retro, waxed cotton seat bag and wood planked rack are the start:

Ride On!!
