Scotland 2014

Scotland July 2014

We did a 2 week trip to Scotland this past July, 10 of those days on a rented BMW F800GT.  Flew into Edinburgh, stayed a week in Glenelg, opposite the Isle of Skye and did loops thru the Highlands.  We then rode to Moffat in southern Scotland, did more loops and then finished on foot in Edinburgh after we turned the bike in.

A fantastic trip, such a beautiful country…with History all around you.  The F800GT was the perfect bike:  light, nimble, decent power, comfortable…a very underrated motorcycle.

Heading into Glenelg, on the west coast, opposite the Isle of Skye.  We rented a little cottage, right on the water.

The last turntable ferry in Scotland.

Eilean Donan Castle

"Bike under rainbow"…the view from our front porch.  There were several rainbows during the week, showers would come and go, but generally we had great weather.

Heading to Applecross on what would be many "single track" roads on this trip.  See that wide area?  That's a "passing place."  Whoever gets there first, pulls over so the oncoming vehicle can get by on these two way roads.  Works surprisingly well.

The Applecross Inn

Mr. Happy Puppet takes a break at the Arch Inn in Ullapool.  Somewhere near there our satnav decided to jump off for the second time, never to be seen again.

Mr. Happy Puppet far, far from home.  The last few miles in got very foggy, which seemed perfect!

Completely by luck, we got to Dunrobin Castle just in time for a falconry exhibition.

Clan Macdonald castle on the Isle of Skye

Lots and lots of peat!!

Hitting the bank in Portree on the Isle of Skye.

The Buccleugh Arms Hotel in Moffat, run by Dave Smith and his family, riders all.  Great place, welcome and local knowledge.  Bike storage lockers in the back!

Honey I'm home!!

Home of the Holy Grail…

Edinburgh Castle.  Edinburgh is a wonderful city to explore on foot.  We had turned the bike in, and rented a place right in the center of town.  History surrounds you.
