The 80% Solution

The 80% Solution

So simple.  A button.  A menu.  Another button.  Another menu.  Another button.  Another menu.  One more button.  The last menu.  The last button.

Eighty percent solved.  Buttons and menus, today's solutions.  I can feel my inner Luddite slowly, slowly falling away…

The dash, that all-singing, all-dancing, all color, iPod-like display, is now mostly readable in the bright Arizona sun.  Buttons and menus.

The solution?  Choose "night."  That's right, "night."  It "reverses" the display…instead of a white background with black numbers and tach in the "day" mode, you get a black background with white numbers and tach when you opt for "night."  The day mode is an epic fail under the bright sun…the display completely fades to black, especially with the sun over your shoulder.  In night mode, the white numbers show through, at least enough to make them readable, and you can actually see the tach at a glance.

The remaining 20%?  Well, that's the glare.  Helmet reflection in the dash is ever present; I think I'm going to try a matte-finish iPad antireflective film next.

I can't believe it took me almost 5500 miles to try the buttons and embrace the night…

Here is "night" mode…the white numbers and tach line show through the sun.  Not perfect, but much, much better than "day" mode.  See the glare from taking the picture?  When you're on the bike, you get a very good view of your helmet.

This is "day" mode…white background with black numbers.  Hard to tell from the pics, but the black numbers get almost completely obscured by the sun.  The tach is especially unreadable in this mode.  Bring on the night…
